Who are we?
Amy Baker
I graduated after 30 years as a media executive. I have been actively involved with Casa Guatemala since 2011, contributing my skills and expertise to make a positive impact on the organization’s mission.
Currently, I am volunteering at Oasis in Paterson, NJ, which is a safe haven for women and children. Every fiber of my body sings with the success of these brave women.
I am grateful for the incredible journeys I have taken over the years and I am in awe of the strength and fortitude of the people I have met around the world with different belief systems, economic situations and determination.
Jan Nelson
If you don’t know me already, you might recognize me as one of Amy’s adventurous travel companions. We’ve shared such incredible experiences together. Since my retirement from over a 30+ year career in education, my goal has been to continue my love of travel and discover the world as well as to give back to communities I visit. What I treasure most about traveling is immersing myself in local culture and positively impacting the people I meet along the way.
I have been dedicated to Casa Guatemala since 2001 when I originally arrived as a volunteer. What began as a three month stay, turned into three years and then, a lifetime of passion and commitment. Since 2014, I have worked as the Executive Director of Casa Guatemala, managing the fundraising in Guatemala, Canada and the USA. I oversee the day to day operations of Casa Guatemala and Hotel Backpackers with the help of my dedicated local team of employees.
